Estimate Your Daily Water Needs
This calculator gives a rough estimate of how much water you may want to drink in a day. It starts with your body weight, then adds a small amount for structured exercise. Individual hydration needs can vary widely depending on climate, health, and other factors.
Important Notes About Hydration
Water needs are personal and can change day to day. This calculator provides a simple starting estimate based on body weight and adds extra fluid for exercise, but it should not replace professional guidance.
Adequate Intake (AI) reference values
The National Academies suggest an Adequate Intake for total water (from all beverages and foods) of about 3.7 liters per day for adult men and 2.7 liters per day for adult women. These are population-level reference values rather than individualized prescriptions.
When you may need more fluids
- Exercise that causes noticeable sweating.
- Hot or humid environments and higher altitudes.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Some health conditions or medications that affect fluid balance.
What counts toward total water?
Total water includes plain water, other beverages, and moisture from foods. Hydration needs can often be met through a combination of drinks and water-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, and soups.
Important limitations
- Too little or too much water can be harmful for certain people.
- Medical conditions like kidney or heart disease may require personalized guidance.
- This tool is informational only and does not provide medical advice.
